H: You know, when it comes down to relationships, I think it’s enough to find someone who’s psychologically stable. And OK, not too stupid.
Me: I know. I mean, all this intellectual connection, this sense that you’re getting epiphanies just by having a conversation with another person, I can get that from my friends, right? I mean I get these things from you but it doesn’t mean I have to make out with you too.
H: Yeah. Eew.
Me: But don’t you think sometimes you wish you’d be able to find all these things in one person? You want everything to come together, there’s this sense of wholeness, and you don’t end up feeling so fragmented. And you don’t want to doubt, sometimes, that the person you love is lacking something.
H: You think so? But if that were to happen, when you lose this person, you lose *everything*.
